Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo is leaving Manchester United "with immediate effect", the Premier League club has announced, ending his controversial contract for a second spell with the club.

"I love Manchester United, I love the fans and that will never change. It feels like the right time to seek a new challenge. I wish Manchester United all the best," Ronaldo said in a statement.

Ronaldo revealed in a recent interview that he felt "betrayed" by Manchester United and that manager Erik ten Hag and other senior management were pushing him to leave.

In an interview with British Talk TV host PiersMorgan, Ronaldo made a litany of allegations about the club forcing him out of the team, a lack of empathy from the team's top management after the death of his newborn in April, the Glazer family, the owners, not caring about the team, and the fact that the team was not being cared for. And the head coach Tenghaag could not earn his respect and did not respect him.

Ronaldo said it was Alex Ferguson who persuaded him to return to United on a two-year deal when he left Juventus in August 2021.

Ronaldo first joined United in 2003, when he was coached by Ferguson. During that time, he won three Premier League titles, a Champions League title and the first Ballon d 'Or award for the best player in the world.

Despite Ronaldo scoring 24 goals in all competitions last season, United endured a poor season, finishing sixth in the Premier League and failing to qualify for the Champions League.
