Kipkoji, 37, has won 15 of his 17 career marathons, including two Olympic Marathon titles in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 and 10 World Marathon Majors, Reuters reported.

On a cloudy day, KipkoJI showed amazing PACE and SPEED along the flat downtown course, cementinghis status as the greatest marathon runner of all time.

"I'm happy with my preparation," Kipkoji said after the race. "I think my speed is due to teamwork. It's all about teamwork."

He said: "I planned to go fast in the first half, I wanted to go as fast as possible, it was a good performance, my legs and body still feel young, but the most important thing is my head, it also makes me feel fresh and young. I am very happy to break the world record."

In the early stages, only a handful of runners and pacers could keep up with Kipkoji's pace of less than three minutes per kilometer. Kipkoji gradually pulled away from last year's champion Guye Adola, but Adora's Ethiopian compatriot Andamlak Belihu was close behind, and the two reached the halfway point in less than an hour.

Belehu eventually lost momentum at 27 kilometers, and Kipkoji was on his way to breaking the record. Kipkoji slowed down slightly in the second half of the race, but continued to push hard for the final 500 meters. As the sun began to appear, he crossed the finish line at Berlin's landmark Brandenburg Gate, beating his world record set four years ago by half a minute.

In 2019, Kipkoji ran 1 hour, 59 minutes and 40 seconds on a specially designed course in Vienna, becoming the only person to complete a marathon in under two hours, but because the record was not set in a race, it was not officially recognized.

Asked in Berlin next year if he will attempt to try to set the record within two hours, kip KeJi said: "let us to plan another day. I need to celebrate this record, and must know what will happen.... There are more things in my leg. I hope that the future is still wonderful. My mind is still in the rotation, the body still in absorbing training."
