Messi mania shows no signs of abating anytime soon. Ticket prices for the Sept. 3 match between Messi's Miami Inter and last year's champions Los Angeles FC will set a new Major League Soccer (MLS) record, according to TickPick.
Before soccer superstar Lionel Messi joined the team, the average MLS ticket price was $110, while the current average price is about $690, a 527% increase in the average ticket price, CNN reported.
With the game just days away, the cheapest ticket to see Messi play last year's MLS champion Los Angeles FC is $785. According to TickPick, ticket prices drop significantly without Messi, with the cheapest ticket for a match after Los Angeles FC, for example, going for $151, which is 80 percent cheaper.
However, this may be the upper limit of ticket prices. Brett Goldberg, co-CEO of TickPick, told CNN that the market is "likely to remain stable at current prices, although there is still potential for higher fares due to higher demand."
Since Messi moved to MLS, his appearances have often caused ticket prices to soar. Messi's regular debut against the New York Red Bulls last week cost nearly 10 times more than the New York Red Bulls normally charge.
Messi mania also extends off the pitch. Apple said subscriptions to its football streaming package have soared since Messi joined Inter Miami in July. Adidas said demand for Messi's jerseys was "unprecedented" and orders were piling up until October.
