Japanese scholars estimate that Japanese MLB Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Otani will create about 50.4 billion yen (about 340 million U.S. dollars) in economic benefits this year, and if Otani moves to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2024, it will create about 14 billion yen (about 95 million U.S. dollars) more economic benefits than if he stays with the Angels.
Japan Daily Sports reported that Miyamoto Katsuhiro, an honorary professor at Kansai University in Japan, estimated that Otani, who has become a free agent, will create economic benefits of about 504.1008 million yen this year, and if he continues to stay in 2024, the economic benefits created will be about 50 billion yen, which is not far from this year; However, if the team is transferred to the Dodgers in 2024, it is expected to create about 64.68 billion yen in economic benefits.
Kansai University released the Miyamoto calculation today. Miyamoto said through the school that Otani has created huge economic benefits because of his performances such as being voted the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the American League (AL) twice this year.
Miyamoto said that if Otani moves to the Dodgers in 2024, his economic benefits are expected to increase by about 14 billion yen compared to staying with the Angels.
The Kyodo News agency reported that Miyamoto estimated the economic benefits of Otani by adding up his annual salary, sponsorship payments, the amount of money spent by the increased crowds at the stadium, and the amount of merchandise sold in Japan.
