Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs' 27-year-old quarterback, has at least 10 good years ahead of him if he's lucky. Breaking Peyton Manning's record of five NFL MVPS isn't pie in the sky.
Manning didn't win his second career MVP until he was 28. Maholmes won his second MVP at the annual NFL Individual award on Saturday night. The vote was one-sided, with 48 first-place votes out of 50.
"I don't want to have any regrets," he said before this week's Super Bowl. "When I look back at the end of my career, I don't want to look back and say, 'Hey, I didn't give it everything to win the Super Bowl' because I had a lot of great people around me. I want to end my career by making sure I gave it my all on the football field."
Mahomes was expected to win the MVP. His first MVP season in 2018 was the epitome of a new generation taking the baton. Threw 50 touchdowns in his first season as a starter for the Chiefs. In some ways, his second MVP season was even better. He passed for a career-high 5,250 yards and 41 touchdowns, setting NFL records for passing, rushing and receiving yards in a season.
More importantly, Maholmes will challenge the MVP spell that has held him since 1999. Kurt Warner and the 1999 St. Louis RAMS were the last players to win the regular season MVP and the Super Bowl. The nine MVPS since then have gone on to win the Super Bowl, but none of them.
Winning the Super Bowl is not only about breaking the spell, it's about making history. Only nine people in NFL history have won multiple MVPS, and only Joe Montana, Manning and Tom Brady have won multiple regular MVPS and Super Bowl rings as starting quarterbacks.
