American pop star Rihanna says she will use her NFL championship game halftime show on Tuesday to speak out for immigrants and black women. Rihanna refused to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show four years ago in protest of racism.
The Kansas City Chiefs will play the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl on Tuesday, and Rihanna, who has won nine Grammy Awards, will perform at halftime. The Super Bowl is often the most-watched program of the year in the United States.
Rihanna, who was born on the Caribbean island of Barbados, gave birth to a son in May last year and has not performed live in seven years, Agence France-Presce reported.
"The Super Bowl is one of the biggest stages in the world," she told a press conference today. "It's scary because I haven't been on stage in seven years, but I'm excited by the challenge."
Rihanna turned down an offer to perform at the 2019 Super Bowl halftime show in solidarity with former San Francisco 49ers star Colin Kaepernick.
Kaepernick was banned by the league in 2016 for kneeling during the national anthem to protest racial discrimination and police brutality, and Rihanna declined to perform at the 2019 Super Bowl halftime show in solidarity with him.
