Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has won the NFL Super Bowl MVP twice in just four years. The American football and baseball amphibious master is known as having a ball speed of more than 150 kilometers, but chose the NFL path six years ago to set himself up for even more amazing achievements.
The Chiefs won Super Bowl XXVII for the third time in franchise history, beating the Philadelphia Eagles 38:35. Maholmes has won at least two Super Bowls and MVPS in his career, a feat only five players have achieved, with recently announced retirement legend Tom Brady winning seven Super Bowls and five MVPS.
The Chiefs signed Maholmes to a 10-year, $450 million contract after the 2020 season, creating the highest total value in NFL history. This season's annual salary of $40.45 million ranks third in the league. He is only the seventh player in history to win both the annual MVP and Super Bowl MVP in the same season.
The 27-year-old started his NFL career in 2017, starting only one game in his rookie season. He became the starting quarterback of the Chiefs the following year. He went to the Super Bowl three times in five seasons, and despite spraining his ankle in the playoffs recently, he did his best to play for the team until the end, showing his ability to dominate the field.
"I told everybody all week that nothing was going to keep me off the field." "I just want to shout out to my teammates, meet all the challenges, and we must win the Super Bowl," he said.
Mahomes comes from a baseball family. His father, Pat Mahomes, went 42-39 with five saves and a 5.47 ERA in 11 seasons in the major leagues. Maholmes was selected by the Tigers in the 37th round of the 2014 Major League draft, but chose not to play professional baseball, and later moved up to college to focus on American football.
Tim Grieve, a retired Tiger scout, once pointed out that if Maholmes had focused on throwing, he would have pitched 94 to 95 miles (151 to 153 kilometers), throwing football like baseball.
