The Australian men's tennis player Nick Kyrgios pleaded guilty today to allegations of assault by a former girlfriend. The judge found it a "single act of stupidity" and Kirillos was not convicted.
Agence France-Presse reports Canberra magistrates dismissed charges of assault against Kirillos.
Kirilos, 27, a former Wimbledon Grand Slam finalist, admitted in a Canberra court to assaulting his then-girlfriend Chiara Passari on January 10, 2021, pushing her to the ground after a heated argument.
Pasari broke up with Kirillos 10 months later and reported the incident to police, the lawyer told the court.
In a statement read in court, Pasari said she was so traumatised by the incident that she lost weight and was bedrived, unable to sleep and unable to start new relationships.
Sam Borenstein, a psychologist, told the court that Kirillos suffered from recurrent bouts of severe depression, including thoughts of self-harm, insomnia, agitation and guilt.
Borenstein says Kirillos, who used to rely on alcohol and drugs to cope with the situation, has begun to make progress in dealing with the problems. "His mental health has improved significantly as we speak," Borenstein said.
Magistrate Beth Campbell said Kirillos' actions were bad, but the attack was not planned or premeditated, but a "single act of stupidity" by a young man trying to get out of a stressful situation.
Kirillos allegedly pushed Pasari when she refused to let him leave her apartment in Canberra.
