The ball that the late Argentine soccer golden boy Diego Maradona hit into the net at the Mexico World Cup 36 years ago is up for auction and expected to fetch at least $2.8 million.
In Argentina's 1986 World Cup last-8 win over England, Maradona took the world by surprise with his cunning tricks and stunning skills.
Maradona said it was the "hand of God" that helped him sneak the ball into the net with his left hand six minutes into the second half of the Anglo - Afghanistan match.
Reuters reported that Tunisian referee Ali Bin Nasser, who officiated the match, had now put the ball up for auction. "The ball is part of international football history and it feels like the right time to share it with the world," he said. "I hope the winning bidder will display the ball or share it publicly in some other way."
The auction, conducted by auction house Graham Budd, will take place on November 16, with bidders able to register and bid online from October 28.
Maradona died in November 2020 at the age of 60.
