FIFA president Giovanni Infantino said today that the kissing of Spanish football Federation president Luis Rubiares on the lips of El Moso "should never have happened".

Luis Rubiales, president of the Spanish Football Federation, hugged star Jenni Hermoso on the head and kissed her on the lips at the trophy ceremony after the Spanish women's team beat England to win the World Cup. FIFA President Gianni Infantino spoke out for the first time today, saying Rubiares' actions had "spoiled" the moment.

Infantino wrote on Instagram: "What happened after the final whistle spoiled the celebration that these wonderful champions deserved. And what happened over the next few days, it really shouldn't have happened at all."

Four days after the Women's World Cup final in Sydney, Australia, the FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings against Rubiares on Monday and suspended him from all football-related activities at national and international levels for 90 days while investigations continue.

Infantino said: "The right thing for us to do is to keep looking at how we can further support women and women's football in the future, both on and off the pitch. Uphold the right values and respect the players and their wonderful performances."

Jorge Vilda, the controversial head coach of the Spanish women's football team, is on the verge of being forced to hand over his sword even after leading the team to the World Cup title amid a scandal engulfing the country's football federation.

More than 80 Spanish women's football players walked out after Lubiares kissed El Moso on the lips until the football federation's top brass made changes.

Rubiares has refused to resign and denounced those who demonized him as "fake feminists." Birda praised the remarks last week, but later backtracked and criticized Rubiares for "inappropriate and unacceptable" behavior.
