The Yankees beat the Redskins 4-1 today, completing a three-game sweep. In a rare move, both chiefs were ejected. Yankees manager Aaron Boone set the record for the earliest ejection of his career by calling it quits before noon in the first inning.
Yankees starter Luis Severino returned from the disabled list today for his first start of the season. He allowed one run and four hits in 4.2 innings.
Severino opened the game by walking four straight bad balls to Jonathan India, and with two outs Spencer Steer swept a fly ball to right field that right fielder Jake Bauers chased down the line and slid down. The ball caught off his glove and rolled out. First base referee Nestor Ceja made a foul call, and Powers did not actively retrieve the ball.
To the surprise of Boone and Powers, the ball was later ruled inbounds, and chief umpire Brian O'Nora declared it a double and ruled India could have run back to the 1.
Boone, who argued with the umpires and was ejected, said after the game that his argument wasn't about whether the ball was in bounds, but about why India thought he could run back in when he was rounding second base. "I just wanted an explanation, but they said they couldn't argue the replay decision."
The game kicked off at 11.35am local time on Sunday and Boone was ejected at 11.54am, prompting fans to laugh: "Boone was ejected before I got up"; It was the 29th ejection ticket of his coaching career. Redskins manager David Bell also left work early in the eighth inning after arguing with umpires in protest of a surprise pitch.

In the last three seasons, Boone's 18 ejections and Bell's 12 ranked second. This game was the first in the season in which both coaches were ejected, which was not surprising to the American media.
