It was close to 1 a.m. on Sunday and few people left the O2 Arena in London, which seats nearly 20,000 people. Roger Federer wrapped up what he thought was the perfect send-off by taking a slow lap of honour after crying, waving his hands, patting his left chest and blowing kisses to a standing ovation.

Strictly speaking, it may not be the most perfect retirement. In the last match of his career, he and partner Rafael Nadal lost the doubles match in the Laver Cup. After the first match on the 23rd, Team Europe and Team World were tied with two points each.
