Carlos Correa, who has said he wants to play in the Classic even if he is born, announced his retirement from the Puerto Rico team on the 6th, citing his wife's impending birth. The Twins stressed that it was not related to his health problems, but it was considered somewhat related.

Correa'S CONTRACT IS THE BIGGEST TOPIC OF THE SEASON, after the GIANTS, the Mets did not pass the physical, the final decision to six years, $200 million, with seven through 10 conditional options to return to the Twins.

"After careful discussions with Corey, we agreed that it was in the best interest of both parties not to participate in the Classic," said Derek Falvey, president of baseball operations for the Twins. "This was a difficult decision for Corey, who is proud to represent his country and has always wanted to make this happen."

Coria's wife is pregnant with their second child, due in the first week of the Classic, and the Twins said they didn't want Coria to be between the national team and family duties at that time, saying it wouldn't help him prepare for this year's season, and advised him to withdraw from the Classic.

The news sparked debate about Coria's health, AS SHE HAD previously expressed enthusiasm for the Classic and had discussed the possibility of giving birth a week early with doctors.

The Twins stressed that Coria's absence from the Classic had nothing to do with health issues, but The Athletic's Dan Hayes reported, "According to Major League sources, both sides agree that the situation is complicated by the fact that Coria's wife is expecting a child, but acknowledge that pulling out of the Classic will minimize the risk of injury, I can prepare for this season as usual."
