Damian Lillard signed a contract extension with the Pioneers over the summer, making him the highest-paid player in franchise history at $63 million a season. In fact, he is now the next three players on the NBA's all-time salary list who signed contracts this offseason. This can not help but cause some retired stars to eat some taste, sigh really born in the wrong era.
Shaquille O'Neal, for example, says he would be worth $400m over five years in the modern era. And Charles Barkley, O 'Neil's regular on the show, chimed in with his own sense of humor: "Let me tell you, I love my mother, but every time I see a contract like this, I want to drive over to her grave and call her up and say, 'Why don't you wait a few years to have me? Just wait a few years.'"
Buckley, however, made a point of saying that he knows the phenomenon of high salaries has evolved with The Times, just as he used to earn more than his predecessors.
Buckley said: I don't want to be a difficult old man. I get paid more than Bill Russell, but he's obviously a better player than me. I also get paid more than Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who's a lot better than me. So bless the young players, you can earn this kind of money if you work hard."
