The Chiefs' lank but speedy No. 3 receiver, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, has had a miserable season with just two catches for touchdowns in the routine and a 51.9 percent catch success rate. But HE SCORED TOUCHDOWNS IN THE TWO PLAYOFF GAMES that HELPED THE CHIEFS REACH THE SUPER BOWL, AND stepped up IN THE AL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES when several OF HIS teammates were injured and down, and he is in GOOD shape TO be A game-changing assassin IN THE Super Bowl.
At 6 feet 4 inches, Waldeskanen can run a 40-yard dash in 4.37 seconds. Unfortunately, he has the physical strength but the thin frame, and the performance is not impressive. He was drafted in the fifth round in 2018, and the acid people urged him to practice more. Even with Aaron Rodgers, the Packers' best season was just 690 yards and six touchdowns. And his catch success rate is either a 4 or a 5 is too low. Besides, he has only two or three touchdowns.
But THAT'S WHY THE CHIEFS SIGNED HIM FOR $30 MILLION OVER THREE YEARS. He caught six of eight passes for 116 yards and one touchdown in last week's AL Championship Game.
It may be a coincidence that there aren't many secondary receivers who are tall, thin, and fast enough to play assassin in the Super Bowl. The most recent, probably in the RAMS vs. Patriots Super Bowl, is Josh Reynolds, who now plays for the Lions.
The Chiefs have Travis Kelce and Juju Smith-Schuster for the long pass and a running back who can get the job done for the short pass. But finding his form, Vardes Scantinen used his speed to his advantage, anticipated his route as the defender got out of position to block the path, and his run across the field was deadly. Against the Tigers, he scored a crucial touchdown while the safety was drawn away. In this Super Bowl, he could be a supporting role in changing the outcome of the game.
