England, the favourites to win the women's World Cup, beat Australia 3-1 today with a goal from Tooney, Hemp and Russo to set up a showdown with Spain in the final.

England, who have won the European women's championship and failed to reach the semifinals at the last two World Cups, reached the final for the first time, Agence France-Presse reported.

United women's player Ella Toone took a 1-0 lead nine minutes before the break with a shot into the net from inside the penalty area.

Australian star Sam Kerr scored a long shot from 30 yards in the 63rd minute of the second half to tie the game at 1.

But eight minutes later, England striker Lauren Hemp forced her way into the penalty area and took advantage of Australia's defensive error to score the goal and give the team the lead. Alessia Russo added an insurance goal with four minutes left in the game to make it 3-1.

England will face Spain, who beat Sweden 2-1, for the title at Stadium Australia in Sydney on Sunday.
